Bernau West Turm (tower)
Title:  Bernau West Turm (tower)
Description:  Unfortunately I didn´t take a pic from the outside in the 80s. So this one from 5/2007 has to make it. One year out of use and of traces from vandalism are visible. But it´s still beautiful. The style of architecture of the 1910 building is called "Neue Sachlichkeit" which translates to somewhat like "new objectivity / sobriety"

Bernau West Turm (tower)
Title:  Bernau West Turm (tower)
Description:  Bwt 5/2007 inside. Out of use for a year one can see what happens. Even though the computerization proceeds fast, many of those are still operating. They do so for more than 100 years.

Title:  Untitled
Description:  1986 Bernau bei Berlin. Terminal of the Berliner S-Bahn, station on the double track line Berlin - Stralsund / Stettin. A train like this will rush 3 years later into the ticket office (see other pics). The white board in front of the train is the Automatic Train Stop. To the left is a coal train with a Russian BR 120. The electrification was recently completed.

Russian Power
Title:  Russian Power
Description:  4.4.1992 Berlin - Buch. Due to track work only 1 track to the next station was available. 4 BR 220 (the 4th is hidden behind the 3rd from left) waited for 232 286-5 on the right to clear the track. Since freight traffic decreased enormous after the unification, empty engines were all over. The cars behind the 2nd 220 were actually storaged there for month so that overtaking only in one direction was possible. The 220 would sold or wrecked soon while the 232 got some tuning and works untill today. I took that pic just for fun and did not have the historical aspect in mind at that time. Unfortunately.

Red Army leaving Germany
Title:  Red Army leaving Germany
Description:  Spring 1992. The end of WWII - the winner leaves the loser. The Russians went home in a uncertain future while Germany celebrates its unification. Three years before I´d be arrested for taking such a pic. In the backround the unused West Tower is visible and to the left the City Rail (S-Bahn) station.

Title:  Untitled
Description:  Sep. 1989 Bernau bei Berlin. A local train (Berliner S-Bahn) didn´t stop where it should have and rushed therefore into the building. The engineer and the ticket sales person in the office were injured seriously. Pic was taken 2 day later when the stairway / exit was already repaired.

Untitled
Title:  Untitled
Description:  Sep. 1989. Since the 1920s , the Berliner S-Bahn has a Automatic Stop System, if a train passes a stop signal. But because it doesn´t check the speed, the train which fell into the building began to brake while "flying". Both engineer and sales person in the ticket office survived.

tower inside - interlocking open
Title:  tower inside - interlocking open
Description:  1992 Stellwerk "Bu" / Berlin - Buch, tower "Bu". The station had 3 mechanical towers that merged in the late 80s to a mechanic-electrical interlocking. Switches and signals were connected by electrical wire while the depencies between the possible ways trains could go, were made by metal beams and the little levers you can see in the middle. Red is for signals, blue for switches. The red pieces hanging and sticking on the levers are reminder not to use them. The black dots / bowls within are rings. The interlocking was open due to maintanance work.

Bernau West Turm (tower)
Title:  Bernau West Turm (tower)
Description:  Bernau West Turm (tower) - Bwt around 1968. Me as apprentice and the employee who worked and taught me. Beside the remarkable haircut everything has changed. The signal lever were replaced when tranforming the 4 semaphores into light signals. Hence, Bernau lost all its freight after 1994 step by step and evebtually the yard was unused. Half of the levers for switches in the foreground disappeard. Finally 8/2006 half of the line came to CTC which we call Estw (electronically stellwerk / interlocking)
